About ECG and PPG

What information can I receive by wearing CART?

As its name Cardio Tracker (CART) implies, CART on your finger collects your ECG and PPG signals and then analyzes the collected signals to obtain information on the pulse rate and Atrial Fibrillation(AF). ECG, an abbreviation of electrocardiogram, is a signal generated by measuring the amplified electrical activity of the heart.
PPG, an abbreviation of photoplethysmography, is a pulsating signal that uses the optical properties of biological tissue to sense and display the changes in the volume of blood pumped by the heart.

May I know how it measures the ECG signals?

To measure the ECG signals, you are required to carry out self-check operations. Tap Measure on the main screen of CART to move to the self-check guide screen. Carry out the self-check process as guided; read the instructions and precautions on the screen carefully. <instructions>
1. Make your hands moist.
2. Wear CART so that the base knuckle of your finger comes into contact with its metal part.
3. Gently cover the metal surface with the fingers of the other hand.
4. Do not move or speak for 30 seconds during the measurement time.</instructions> <precautions>
1. Do not press on the metal surface hard.
2. Cover as much of the metal surface as possible with the fingers of the other hand.</precautions> Here is how the signals are collected. The metal parts inside and outside of the device are used as electrodes to sense for the weak electrical variations generated by the contraction and relaxation of the heart muscle.

May I know how it measures the PPG signals?

The PPG signals are automatically collected while you are wearing your CART. You may measure your PPG through the self-check process. Here is how the signals are collected. You can see an LED inside CART. This LED emits light to the blood vessels inside the finger, and then CART collects the light signals reflected in the bloodstream.

I can see only minor ECG signals from the measured result. Why is that?

For ECG, it measures the microscopic electrical flow of the body. For this reason, please keep your hands moist for the measurement so that the CART can accept the electric flow well. In addition, make the fingers of your other hand (without a ring) cover/contact the ring as widely as possible during the measurement. Despite these efforts, however, the characteristics of ECG may vary from person to person, and you may experience minor signals only.

I can see only minor PPG signals from the measured result. Why is that?

PPG is a pulsating signal that uses the optical properties of biological tissue to sense and display the changes in the volume of blood pumped by the heart. The amplitude of the PPG signal may vary if the user moves during the measurement; it can also be affected by a change in pressure between the finger (wearing the ring) and the ring body, or user-specific characteristics.

How can I improve the quality of the signals being collected?

Basically, the measurement should be carried out in a static state with no motion to ensure collection of quality signals. In the case of PPG, the sensors inside the CART ring shall contact the palm side (of your finger) to collect good signals. If the sensors contact with the other side of your finger, then the quality of collected signals may be deteriorated.
The quality of the signals may also be affected if the ring is rotated or moved during the measurement or the pressure between the finger and the ring is not constant. For this reason, in order to ensure collection of quality signals, please make sure that the sensors face the palm side, your movement is minimized, and you wear a ring that fits your finger.
In the case of ECG, maintain a certain posture as described in the precautions on the self-check guide screen to collect good ECG signals.

How can I do a self check?

1) Tap Measure from the main screen of the CART app.
2) Tap Start, and then it will start the measurement in 5 seconds. Before the measurement starts, use the fingers of the other hand (without a CART) to gently cover/contact the metal part (bottom of CART) as shown in the figure below and measure it for 30 seconds.
3) When the self-check starts, the blue LED on the top of CART lights up for 2 seconds. After 30 seconds, the blue LED lights up for 1 second, indicating your measurement is complete.
4) While the measurement is in progress, the progress bar is displayed at the top of the screen. Do not move until the progress bar reaches 100%.
5) When the measurement is complete, the measured results appear on the screen. Press the Back icon at the top left to return to the main screen.

The monthly statistics allow you to recognize the actual condition of your heart based on the data accumulated over a month.
